My Community Service
This year as seventh graders, we had the responsibility of doing 16 service hours. I myself at the start of my hours, even before I started, was very nervous. I didn’t really want to do them because I was afraid of how I was going to do and the possibility of messing up really bad. I also thought that it would be 16 boring hours of work that I had to do. But, I still had to do it for a grade and to help others. My service was not very hard as I had one task, the facility was not far, and I did my service hours with a friend.
I had done my service hours at “Amore Retirement Living”. My experience there was much better than I thought it would be. I chose to do my service hours there because my grandparents always cared for me and I’m sure some people there had kids and grandkids. I wanted to give back and help out since they all took care of someone one way or another. When I go to visit my older relatives, they always appreciate it because sometimes they don’t get to go out much and don’t get very many visitors. Sometimes, that’s the case with elderly people in retirement homes, so people love students like us coming to help. Everyone the home was very grateful for us and what we did for them.
On my first day, Jenna and I were nervous but we got through it. We called bingo for the people there so all we had to do was read the little numbers on the balls and help out people who couldn’t hear as well with it. Our problem was, their bingo set was old, so we could hardly read the numbers. We kept having to put them aside and move on. But as time progressed, we got the hang of reading the numbers and I had fun with it. At first, I also couldn’t really project my voice but I learned to there. Jenna and I switched off reading numbers and saying them, but I couldn’t really project my voice as well as her, so I ended up just reading the numbers to Jenna. Even though I had trouble, the people were very nice, especially two women.
While I was volunteering, two people were extremely nice and welcoming to the both of us. One, was the woman at the counter where we checked in. She was very nice and showed us exactly what to do. The woman thanked us a lot and said we were a big help. That’s what really had an impact on me. It felt really good to be impacting the people in the facility with one small activity. Another person who had an impact on me was one of the women who were playing bingo with us. She was like the woman at the counter, very welcoming and kind to us. She even offered us her prizes for winning bingo a few times which was 2 or 3 bags of chips. We politely declined but I appreciated her offer nonetheless. In the end, my experience was pretty great.
At the end of my service hours, I felt pretty good and was surprised at the outcome. I had fun and helped people as well. Doing good things for people really gives you that “fuzzy feeling” inside as they say. It turns out I was worried and nervous for nothing since everything went well and I actually got something out of it other than a hopefully good grade. Next year, I may go back but I would also like to help out in other places as well. I can’t wait for my next experience with helping others while doing service hours because now I know what others’ outlook on volunteers is. Overall, I loved volunteering and being a big help to the people working there and the people staying there.

This is a picture of myself at "Amore Retirement Living" doing my service hours. This was a great experience to have and I had a nice time. The people were welcoming and appreciated us.
